Inbound and Outbound Logistics with Port Pickup and Delivery
Freight coming in, freight going out and the delivery at the end are often split across several companies. Professional Moving Solutions runs all three with one team: port pickup and drayage, container unloading, cross-docking and warehousing, then last mile delivery to the door.

One team from the port to the door
Every handoff between companies is a chance for freight to sit, get miscounted or get damaged without anyone owning the problem. When the same team picks up your freight, receives it, stores it and delivers it, there is one point of contact and one record of what came in and what went out.
We handle inbound logistics from suppliers, carriers and the port, and outbound logistics to stores, distribution centers, job sites and customers. Our Richmond, VA, warehouse and our Edison, NJ, location sit between the two, and our two-person crews finish the job with last mile delivery nationwide.
Inbound logistics
Inbound logistics covers everything that happens to your freight on the way in. We receive freight from suppliers, carriers and the port, then make sure what arrived matches what was shipped before it goes anywhere else.
- Unload the freight
- Check it against the paperwork
- Count every piece
- Note any damage with photos
- Stage it for delivery or store it
Finding a short count or a damaged carton at receiving means you can act on it right away, not weeks later when a customer opens the box.
Port pickup and drayage
Drayage is the short truck move that takes a full shipping container from the port terminal to a warehouse. We pick up full containers from the terminal, and we also pick up palletized, crated and loose freight from port warehouses and container freight stations.
We provide port pickup at the Port of Virginia, including the Norfolk-area terminals and Richmond Marine Terminal, at Port Newark-Elizabeth in New Jersey, and at the Port of Baltimore.
Before we can pick anything up, the freight must be cleared by your customs broker and released by the terminal. Once it is released, picking it up promptly helps you avoid terminal storage charges, so send us the release details as soon as you have them.
Container unloading, transloading and cross-docking
Containers come to our Richmond, VA, warehouse or our Edison, NJ, location for container unloading. We sort the freight and palletize it, then either cross-dock it straight onto outbound trucks or put it into storage. Moving freight from the container onto pallets and outbound trucks this way is often called transloading.
Cross-docking makes sense when the freight already has somewhere to go. Storage makes sense when sites, stores or customers are not ready yet. If your freight needs rework, such as re-palletizing or sorting by destination, we quote it from photos.
Warehousing between the port and delivery
Our Richmond, VA, commercial storage takes anything from one pallet up to 100 pallets, short or long term, and our Edison, NJ, location supports freight coming through the Northeast. Freight waits with us until you set the delivery dates, and nothing has to move twice to get there.
Port to door delivery
The last stop is often the hardest part. We provide last mile and white glove delivery from our dock to stores, businesses, job sites and homes, at the service level you need: curbside, threshold or room of choice.
Two-person crews call ahead to schedule, inspect each item with the customer, and take photo proof of delivery and a signature. Every driver and helper is background checked and drug screened.
Outbound logistics
Outbound logistics is the other half: getting freight from the warehouse to wherever it needs to be. We stage and palletize orders, load outbound trucks, and deliver to stores, distribution centers, job sites and customers.
For multi-site rollouts, we stage freight by site and deliver each location on its own date. If you have your own carriers for some lanes, we load and hand the freight off to them.
Returns coming back in
Some freight comes back: returns, wrong items and damaged goods. We pick them up and bring them back into the warehouse, where they are received and checked the same way as new freight. See reverse logistics for more.
Who uses inbound and outbound logistics
Importers and distributors use us to move containers from the port and get freight out to customers. Manufacturers and retailers use us to receive, stage and deliver product. E-commerce brands selling big and bulky goods use us for the port pickup and the delivery to the buyer. Freight brokers and forwarders use us for the drayage and the delivery end, and project managers and installers use us to hold freight until a site is ready.

Frequently asked questions
What is inbound logistics?
Inbound logistics is everything that happens to freight on the way in: pickup from suppliers, carriers or the port, then unloading, checking against the paperwork, counting and noting damage with photos. After that, the freight is staged for delivery or stored.
What is outbound logistics?
Outbound logistics is getting freight from the warehouse to where it needs to go. We stage and palletize orders, load outbound trucks, and deliver to stores, distribution centers, job sites and customers, or hand freight off to your own carriers.
What is drayage?
Drayage is the short truck move that takes a full shipping container from the port terminal to a warehouse. We pick up containers from the terminal and bring them to our Richmond, VA, warehouse or our Edison, NJ, location for unloading.
Do you pick up containers from the Port of Virginia?
Yes. We pick up at the Norfolk-area terminals and Richmond Marine Terminal, as well as Port Newark-Elizabeth in New Jersey and the Port of Baltimore. The freight must be cleared by your customs broker and released by the terminal before we can pick it up.
Can you pick up loose freight from a port warehouse?
Yes. Along with full containers, we pick up palletized, crated and loose freight from port warehouses and container freight stations. Tell us the pickup location, the piece or pallet count and the weight when you ask for a quote.
Can you unload my container and deliver the freight?
Yes. We unload containers at our Richmond, VA, warehouse or our Edison, NJ, location, sort and palletize the freight, and cross-dock it onto outbound trucks or store it. Our two-person crews then deliver it curbside, to the threshold or to the room of choice.
Can you store freight between the port and delivery?
Yes. Our Richmond, VA, commercial storage takes anything from one pallet up to 100 pallets, and we also have a location in Edison, NJ. We hold the freight and deliver it on the dates you set.
