Election Day, Gas Prices and Big-and-Bulky Delivery: What to Expect This Fall
Published by Professional Moving Solutions

With the November 3 midterm elections less than three weeks away, fuel prices are one of the biggest topics in the country. Whoever you vote for, if your business delivers furniture, appliances, fitness equipment or other bulky goods, what happens at the pump hits your margins, right as the holiday rush starts.
Where fuel prices stand right now
- The AAA national average for regular gas was about $4.33 a gallon on October 14, 2026.
- September averaged $4.33, a record for the month and 50 cents above the previous September high, according to AAA.
- Diesel, which powers delivery trucks, peaked near $6.53 a gallon on September 22 and has eased to around $6.28.
- Prices jumped in March after the conflict with Iran disrupted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
Will the election change prices?
Not overnight. Fuel prices follow global oil supply, refinery output and seasonal demand far more than any single vote. Prediction markets recently gave about a 68% chance that diesel is still above $6 a gallon on Election Day. Even when policy changes, it usually takes months to reach the pump, so plan for fuel to stay high through peak season.
What it means for last-mile delivery
The last mile is already the most expensive part of shipping. High fuel makes failed deliveries, second attempts and half-empty routes even more costly.
How to keep delivery costs under control
- Lock in peak-season delivery rates early
- Confirm appointments and call ahead so the first attempt is the only attempt
- Send accurate item sizes, weights and access details (stairs, elevators, tight halls) up front
- Batch deliveries by area instead of running one-offs
- Use one partner for receiving, storage and final delivery to cut extra handoffs
Two-person, white-glove delivery done right the first time
Professional Moving Solutions delivers big, bulky and high-value items with two-person crews, protected floors and call-ahead scheduling, from curbside drop-off to full unpacking, assembly and debris removal. Getting it right the first time is the best fuel savings there is.
