Hot Shot Delivery: When Your Freight Can’t Wait

A machine is down on a production line. A trade show booth is stuck at the wrong warehouse. A hospital needs a replacement imaging part before tomorrow's patients. In each case, standard freight is too slow. You need a hot shot.

What is hot shot delivery?

Hot shot delivery means one truck carries your shipment straight from pickup to delivery. It's a dedicated, expedited service. Your freight doesn't share space with other customers' loads, doesn't wait at terminals, and doesn't get moved from truck to truck. The driver loads it and drives it to you.

Hot shots are usually run with a heavy-duty pickup pulling a flatbed or gooseneck trailer, or with a cargo or box truck. That makes them faster to dispatch than a full tractor-trailer, and they fit into places a 53-foot trailer can't.

Hot shot vs. LTL vs. full truckload

  • LTL (less-than-truckload): Cheapest for small freight, but your shipment goes through several terminals and gets handled many times. Transit runs days, not hours.
  • Full truckload: One customer's freight on a full trailer. Costs more than you need if you're moving a few pallets or a single machine.
  • Hot shot: Dedicated like a truckload, but sized and priced for smaller, urgent loads. It leaves when you're ready, not when a route fills up.

If a missed deadline costs more than the freight bill, hot shot is usually the right choice.

What we haul hot shot

  • Medical equipment: imaging components, lab equipment, hospital beds and urgent replacement parts
  • Trade show exhibits: last-minute booth deliveries, forgotten crates and on-site installation labor
  • Industrial and machine parts: parts for down lines, generators, pumps and replacement equipment
  • Port pickups: urgent containers and palletized freight from the Port of Virginia, Port Newark–Elizabeth and the Port of Baltimore
  • High-value and sensitive freight: IT equipment, servers, ATMs, copiers and electronics
  • Construction and oilfield materials: time-critical job-site deliveries

Why companies call Professional Moving Solutions for hot shots

  • Dedicated truck, direct route. Your load is the only load on the truck.
  • Screened crews. Every driver and helper is background-checked and drug-screened.
  • More than a driver. When the delivery needs more than a dock drop, we can provide inside delivery, white glove placement, installation and debris removal.
  • Nationwide coverage from our Richmond, VA and Edison, NJ locations.
  • Storage when timing slips. If the site isn't ready, we can hold your freight in our Richmond commercial storage, from 1 pallet to 100.

What affects hot shot pricing

  • Distance and route
  • Weight, dimensions and number of pallets
  • How soon it has to leave (same day costs more than next day)
  • Liftgate, inside delivery or installation needs
  • Weekend, after-hours or appointment delivery

The fastest way to get an accurate price is to send us the pickup and delivery ZIP codes, dimensions, weight and photos through our quote form.

Hot shot delivery FAQs

How fast can a hot shot pick up?

Often the same day, depending on where the truck is and what equipment the load needs. Call us for the fastest dispatch.

Is hot shot more expensive than LTL?

Per pound, yes. But you pay for one truck and one direct trip instead of days in transit and multiple handoffs. For urgent or fragile freight, that usually costs less in the end.

What size loads fit on a hot shot?

Hot shots are built for loads too big or too urgent for parcel carriers but too small for a full 53-foot trailer, usually a few pallets up to a partial truckload. Send us dimensions and weight and we’ll match the right truck.

Do you do same-day delivery?

Yes, when the distance and timing allow. For longer runs, the driver goes straight through without stopping at terminals.

Can you deliver inside and set up the equipment?

Yes. We offer inside delivery, white glove placement, installation and debris removal.
